Before you apply, use this Uber driver requirements Canada checklist to review work eligibility, the right licence class, an eligible vehicle, insurance, registration, screening, and any required inspection or local permit.

Next, check the licence, vehicle, document, screening, and city requirements for the market where you want to drive. Requirements vary by city under Uber’s national [driver requirements page](https://www.uber.com/ca/en/drive/requirements/), and eligible cars also need to meet city rules under Uber [vehicle requirements](https://www.uber.com/ca/en/drive/requirements/vehicle-requirements/). Check your city and vehicle option before you buy a car, book an inspection, or assume your licence class works.

The short version: you need to be eligible to work in Canada, meet Uber’s age rules, upload driver and vehicle documents, pass screening, use an eligible vehicle, and keep required documents in the car. In many markets, that means being at least 21 before you apply. In some cities, you also need a Private Transportation Company licence, a vulnerable-sector check, a commercial vehicle inspection, local training, snow or all-weather tires, or a higher licence class.

## Quick answer: Uber driver requirements Canada

To drive Uber in Canada, start with the city page for where you will accept trips. The common checklist is:

- meet Uber’s minimum age and legal driving requirements
- hold the required licence class for your province or city
- upload proof of identity and work eligibility where required
- upload vehicle registration and insurance showing you as the registered owner or insured driver if you use your own vehicle
- pass Uber’s driving-record and criminal-history screening
- pass any required annual vehicle inspection
- keep in-car documents ready for bylaw or regulator checks
- display Uber decals or local identifiers where required
- register for GST/HST if you provide taxable commercial ride-sharing services

Do not treat the national vehicle page as the whole answer. The national Uber Canada baseline is 10-years-or-newer, but your city can be stricter. For example, current Uber Ontario regulatory rules give Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, and Brampton a 7-year rule, while Vancouver uses a 9-year rule for B.C. driving.

## Minimum vehicle requirements for Uber

Your vehicle generally needs to meet these Uber Canada requirements:

- four-door vehicle
- 10 years or newer
- good condition with no cosmetic damage
- no commercial or Uber branding
- no salvaged or rebuilt vehicles
- passed any required annual inspection by a licensed or certified mechanic
- vehicle registration in the driver’s name

That is the baseline, not a promise that every 10-year-old car qualifies everywhere. The exact model year can change by city and product.

| Location or requirement | Current vehicle-age example |
| --- | --- |
| Uber Canada national vehicle page | 10 years or newer for the national baseline and UberX summary. |
| Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, Brampton | Vehicle models in these Ontario markets need to be 7 years or newer under current Uber Ontario rules. |
| Elsewhere in the GTA | Vehicle models need to be 10 years or newer under current Uber Ontario rules. |
| Vancouver / B.C. | Your vehicle needs to be 9 years or newer, have four doors, and have five seats under current Uber Vancouver rules. |
| Mississauga TNC rules | City rules list maximum seven model years, four doors, Ontario registration, good repair, working seat belts, heating, air conditioning, GPS, and snow-rated tires. |

If your vehicle is close to an age limit, verify the Driver app and the current city page before paying for repairs, inspections, tires, or registration changes.

## Documents to submit during registration

The application usually follows the same basic pattern: create a profile, upload driver documents, add vehicle documents if you will use your own car, complete screening, then activate after approval.

Prepare:

- driver’s licence for the province/city where you will drive
- proof of identity or work eligibility if the city page asks for it, such as a birth certificate, Canadian passport, citizenship card, work permit, social insurance number, or PR card
- driver profile photo
- vehicle registration showing the vehicle is registered in your name
- proof of vehicle insurance that lists you as an insured driver
- vehicle inspection certificate or report, such as a Safety Standards Certificate, Annual Inspection Certificate, or Commercial Vehicle Inspection Report
- local training, licence, or permit documents where required
- GST/HST account number for taxable commercial ride-sharing

Upload clear photos or PDFs. If a document has two sides, include both sides when Uber asks for them, especially vehicle registration. If your city requires an inspection document to be submitted within 36 days of passing, upload it as soon as you receive it. Keep the files you upload, plus any approval or rejection notice, in a year folder with your insurance and inspection records.

## Documents to keep in your car

City bylaw regulators may request rides to inspect your vehicle and driver documents. Keep the required documents in the vehicle, including:

- driver’s licence
- vehicle registration
- proof of insurance
- Safety Standards Certificate, Annual Inspection Certificate, Commercial Vehicle Inspection Report, or local inspection document where required
- PTC driver’s licence, ELVIS document, Uber sticker, decal, or local identifier where required

In Toronto, PTCs such as Uber and Lyft are responsible for submitting valid SSC or AIC documents for PTC drivers. Certificates cannot be more than 36 days old at the time of submission, and hard copies must be kept in the vehicle. If your area requires an Uber sticker or decal while ridesharing, display it before accepting trips to avoid compliance penalties.

## Provincial driver’s licence requirements

Licence classes vary by province and city. Use this as a starting point, then check the active Uber page for your city.

| Province or city example | Licence requirement to verify |
| --- | --- |
| Ontario rideshare markets | In the Ontario markets covered by current Uber rules, drivers must be 21+ with a full G licence or equivalent; G1 and G2 are not accepted. |
| British Columbia / Vancouver | In Vancouver, Class 1, 2, or 4 licences are accepted, whether restricted or unrestricted, and Class 5 is not accepted. |
| Alberta / Calgary and Edmonton | In Calgary and Edmonton, you need a Class 1, 2, or 4 Alberta licence. |
| Quebec City | In Quebec City, Class 5 is now accepted, with additional local requirements. Quebec rules can also refer to Class 5 or 4C, and restricted or probationary licences are not accepted. |

This table is not a national licence rule. A driver who qualifies in one province can still need a different licence class, training step, or inspection in another city.

## B.C. app-based worker rules are separate from onboarding

B.C. app-based worker legislation is separate from Uber onboarding eligibility.

B.C. has province-specific app-based delivery and ride-hail worker standards for engaged time, distance expense amounts, tip treatment, and WorkSafeBC coverage. The rules took effect on September 3, 2024, with an initial $20.88 minimum hourly wage standard and a 35- to 45-cent minimum per-kilometre vehicle-expense allowance.

The adjusted minimum wage rate is $21.43 as of June 1, 2025. Those rules affect pay/protections in B.C.; they do not make a Class 5 licence acceptable for Uber rideshare in Vancouver or replace Uber’s vehicle inspection.

If you drive in B.C., track engaged time, distance, tips, top-ups, vehicle expenses, and kilometres separately so you can review platform statements against your own records.

## Regional screening process overview

Uber screening can include a driving-record review and criminal-history review. The document provider, fee, payment timing, upload step, and processing timeline vary by city.

## Calgary screening

In Calgary, prepare a valid Alberta Class 1, 2, or 4 licence, proof of work eligibility, vehicle registration, vehicle insurance, and a driver profile photo. You also need to contact an Alberta registry for a standard three-year driver abstract and upload it within 30 days of signing up. The abstract shows your driving record, including merit and demerit points, suspensions, and convictions.

Complete the vulnerable-sector check through Calgary police or local police. If you go in person, bring two valid pieces of ID. If you use the Calgary Police ePIC portal, choose Transportation Network Licensing when the application asks which agency it is for.

Calgary drivers also need to keep the Enhanced Livery Vehicle Inspection Standards (ELVIS) document in the car when driving.

## Vancouver screening

In Vancouver, you need a Class 1, 2, or 4 licence; Class 5 is not accepted. Get your Commercial Driving Record from ICBC and upload it in the app. If you want ICBC to send the record directly to Uber, choose the option for sending documents to someone other than yourself and use [bcmvr-group@uber.com](mailto:bcmvr-group@uber.com).

After your Commercial Driving Record is uploaded and reviewed, watch for an email from Triton, Uber’s trusted screening partner, to complete the free background check. The results are usually submitted to your Uber profile within 3 to 5 business days. You can also share your Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (PIC-VS) online; upload all pages so the screening is not delayed.

You also need a commercial vehicle inspection by an approved facility in Vancouver. After passing, upload the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Report within 36 days and keep it in the vehicle.

## Toronto and GTA screening

In Toronto-area markets covered by current Uber Ontario regulatory rules, you need a full G licence or equivalent, Canadian proof of work, insurance with the driver’s name visible, vehicle registration, and an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate. You also need annual background screening, including a Motor Vehicle Record Check and a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check.

The screening results are usually uploaded to your profile within 3 to 5 days after you submit the required information, and the payment is deducted from future earnings. You can also complete both checks yourself and upload the documents online. If you submit them in person, bring the documents and two pieces of ID to an Uber Greenlight Hub.

Uber submits the PTC application to the City of Toronto after your documents and background check are complete.

For Toronto PTC driving, you must meet the City’s criminal-background and driving-history standards, have three years of driving experience, complete City-approved training, and use snow or all-weather tires from December 1 to April 30.

## Quebec City screening

In Quebec City, you currently need a driver’s licence, Class 5 is now accepted, and local training is required. You also need to handle vehicle inspection and sticker/accessory requirements.

For Quebec City screening, complete the background check initiated by the Blainville Police and ISB. The information is shared with Uber, and the $80 cost is deducted during your first four weeks driving with Uber. You also need to submit your SAAQ driving record to confirm you have not had major infractions in the last three years.

Quebec drivers may also need at least two years of driving experience, a valid GST-QST number, and the ability to speak, read, and understand French. Because Quebec rules can include provincial and language-specific requirements, use the live city page and the Driver app before relying on older summaries.

## Additional licences, training, and local rules

Some requirements are handled by Uber after you upload documents. Others require you to complete city or provincial steps.

Examples to check before you apply:

- Toronto: If your vehicle is up to seven years old, Uber submits the PTC application after your documents and background check are complete. City processing can take up to five business days; if approved, you receive a PTC licence number and email. If you do not hear anything after five business days, visit a Greenlight Hub for help.
- Calgary: Complete the City e-training course within 30 days of receiving the email from the City. After you pass, you receive the Transportation Network Driver’s License. The City training cost is $95 and is deducted from future earnings in two instalments.
- Edmonton: The City of Edmonton Vehicle for Hire Driver Training is required and is generated through the app after enrollment.
- Quebec City: Provincial training is required, and the city page includes a training registration cost.
- Toronto and Mississauga: Snow or all-weather tire requirements apply from December 1 to April 30.

Save the completion certificate, approval email, or app screenshot for any local training or licence step. Those records help if a document expires or the app asks for renewal during a busy driving period.

## Insurance and GST/HST basics

Vehicle insurance is part of the Uber application, but approval is not the same as personal insurance advice. Upload the current insurance document Uber asks for and talk to your insurer about rideshare use before accepting trips. The [Insurance for Uber Drivers (Canada)](https://community.mycartracks.com/t/insurance-for-uber-drivers-canada/390) guide explains app-status coverage, province checks, and personal-policy questions in more detail.

Commercial ride-sharing also has a GST/HST rule. If you provide taxable commercial ride-sharing services, CRA guidance requires you to register for GST/HST and charge/collect tax on fares even below the small-supplier threshold. The [GST/HST for Gig Drivers (Canada)](https://community.mycartracks.com/t/gst-hst-for-gig-drivers-canada/378) guide covers that workflow.

## How to register with Uber Canada

Use the city where you plan to drive instead of relying on the general Canada page alone. You need to be eligible to work in Canada and meet the local age, licence, vehicle, document, screening, inspection, and licence requirements before accepting ride requests.

1. Open the Uber Canada drive page or the city-specific get-started page.
2. Create your driver profile.
3. Add your driver information and vehicle information.
4. Upload licence, work-eligibility, profile photo, registration, insurance, and inspection documents.
5. Complete the required background screening.
6. Complete local training, PTC, decal, sticker, or licence steps.
7. Wait for document approval before going online for rides.
8. Set up your tax, insurance, kilometre, and expense records before your first shift.

[MyCarTracks automatic mileage tracking](https://www.mycartracks.com/products/automatic-mileage-tracking) can help you keep Uber trips, inspection errands, business kilometres, and vehicle records separate from personal driving. Start tracking before the first approved shift so your logbook is not missing the setup trips that support the business.

## FAQ

### Can I drive Uber in Canada with a G2, Class 5, or learner licence?

Do not assume so. In the Ontario markets covered by current Uber rules, G1 and G2 are not accepted. In Vancouver, B.C. Class 5 is not accepted for rideshare driving. Licence classes vary by province and city, so check your exact city page.

### Does my vehicle have to be registered in my name?

Your vehicle needs to be registered in your name to qualify under Uber Canada’s vehicle requirements. If you plan to use a borrowed, leased, rented, or fleet vehicle, verify the local document and insurance rules before applying.

### How old can my car be for Uber in Canada?

The national Uber Canada vehicle page gives a 10 years or newer baseline, but local rules can be tighter. Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, and Brampton use 7 years or newer under current Uber Ontario rules, and Vancouver uses 9 years or newer for B.C. driving.

### Do I need winter tires for Uber in Canada?

It depends on the city. In Toronto and Mississauga, snow or all-weather tires apply from December 1 to April 30. City of Toronto and Mississauga pages also support winter/snow tire requirements for PTC/TNC vehicles.

### Can I sign up if my PR card is expired?

In Edmonton, drivers waiting for a renewed PR card can upload the current PR card and PR card extension letter. Use your own city page and keep proof that the renewal or extension document is current.
